Acrylic Laser
Cutting Q&A

General Information

1. What is acrylic laser cutting?

Acrylic laser cutting is a fabrication process where a laser precisely cuts acrylic sheets into shapes and designs based on your digital file (DXF, AI, SVG, PDF). It allows high precision and clean edges ideal for signage, decorations, displays, and custom parts. uMake.ca

2. What types and thicknesses of acrylic can you cut?
uMake can laser cut acrylic from 1/16″ to 1/4″ thickness and offers many colors/finishes including transparent, opaque, mirror, and specialty acrylic. uMake.ca. Acrylic over 1/4" thick, we offer CNC router.

3. What’s the maximum size you can cut?
Their laser cutting bed supports sheets up to 60″ × 60″. uMake.ca

4. Do I need a specific file type to get a quote or place an order?
Customers typically upload vector design files such as DXF, AI, SVG, or PDF to receive an instant quote.

5. Laser Cutting Rates?

For long production runs over 10 hours, laser cutting is billed at $60 per hour.
For short jobs under 1 hour, the rate is $120 per hour.
For orders between 1 and 10 hours, the hourly rate decreases progressively based on total run time, reflecting economies of scale and reduced setup impact.

Ordering & Delivery Questions

6. Is there a minimum order requirement?
No — uMake doesn’t enforce minimum quantities, so you can order single pieces or bulk projects.

7. Do you ship across Canada or internationally?
Yes — we offer fast delivery within Canada and worldwide shipping. Orders over a certain value (e.g., CAD 250) may qualify for free shipping within Canada.

Your shipping cost is calculated instantly with our duform.app platform.

8. How long does it take to receive my acrylic parts?
Typical turnaround and shipping times depend on order size and destination, but uMake is known for fast delivery and production (often within a couple of days). Clients have a choice for the priority speed of their shipment and can choose delays.

9. Do you ship pallet-sized or freight orders?

Yes. uMake operates a full-scale dispatch facility and can securely pack large or oversized orders on pallets or in custom-built crates. For freight shipments or oversized orders, please contact factory@umake.ca prior to ordering.

Material, Quality & Capabilities

10. What kinds of products can be made with acrylic laser cutting?
Popular items include signs, nameplates, awards, keychains, jewelry, coasters, stencils, POS displays, layered art, and more.

11. What is the edge quality like on laser-cut acrylic?
Laser-cut acrylic typically has smooth, almost polished edges. Specialized finishing like diamond polishing or CNC finish can further enhance clarity.

12. Can acrylic be both cut and engraved?
Yes — you can cut outlines and also engrave surface details in the same job, depending on your design.

13. What’s the difference between cast and extruded acrylic?
Cast acrylic has superior optical clarity and fabrication properties, while extruded is more consistent in thickness and often more cost-effective. Either can be laser cut. Extruded off gasses much more so uMake prefers to use cast.

14. Can I chemically weld my acrylic pieces?
For the best results with chemical welding of acrylic, we recommend CNC routing the edges. This ensures a clean, perpendicular edge for a strong bond and helps prevent spider web cracking that can occur with other cutting methods. Properly prepared edges result in a smooth, professional weld.

Technical & Design Questions

15. What design tips improve laser cutting results?
Customers often ask about:

  • Minimum feature size.

  • Tolerances (how tight cuts can be)

  • File setup

  • Vector vs raster lines (use the uMake drawing template)
Good design files with clean vectors usually produce the best cuts.

  • If you use the duform.app platform, any issues will be flagged and fixed.

16. Can you bend or form acrylic after cutting?
Yes — uMake also offers post-processing like line bending/forming to create curved or 3D shapes from laser-cut acrylic sheets. We end up to 47" wide

17. What are typical tolerances for cut acrylic parts?

Tolerances for laser-cut acrylic depend on material thickness, part geometry, and cut length. In general, laser cutting provides high contour accuracy suitable for engineering and precision parts. If your project requires tight dimensional or material thickness tolerances, we recommend contacting uMake directly so we can confirm the actual measured thickness of available acrylic inventory before production.

Customer Concerns & Safety

17. Will laser cutting acrylic produce fumes?
Yes — acrylic releases fumes when cut, so proper ventilation and fume extraction are important — especially in workshop environments. I may be best to use Cast acrylic to reduce the off gas.

18. How are sharp edges handled?
Edges from laser cutting are smooth. For extra polish, mechanical finishing or flame polishing can be applied on request. We also offer Mechanical diamond polishing or buffing wheel polishing.

19. What if my design file is too complex or small?
uMake is a well trained team with years or experience and will review your design and may recommend changes if features are too fine or below the machine’s precision limits.

Service-Related Questions

20. Can you help with design or file preparation?
Yes - uMake offers design support if your file isn’t ready for laser cutting.

21. What if I need a revision or have questions about my quote?
Customers often want clear contact information or assistance to adjust designs and get updated quotes. We can answer any question you have to ensure your project is received as you intended.

22. Do you offer bulk pricing or discounts for large orders?
Yes — pricing often decreases with larger quantities as efficiency increases. Our pricing structure will always support your goals.
